A matboard sits between your artwork and the picture frame, creating breathing room around the image and helping draw the eye towards it. The right colour can quietly connect the artwork to the frame or introduce a deliberate accent.
In a properly assembled frame, the matboard also helps keep the artwork away from the glazing. Choose your finished outside size, opening, colours and finishing options, then check the live preview before ordering.
Layered colour
A second matboard sits beneath the top layer and appears as a narrow reveal around the opening. Use a contrasting colour to pick up a detail in the artwork, or two similar tones for a quieter layered finish.
Cut detail
A V-groove is a fine channel cut into the top matboard around the opening. It adds definition without a second layer and reveals the board's core colour; black-core matboards produce a dark line.
Materials and cutting
Standard matboards are acid-free and pH neutral, with white-core and black-core choices. Museum-grade boards use 100% cotton fibre and are naturally acid and lignin free for conservation-minded framing.
Each matboard is cut to order with a bevelled opening and a clean square outside edge. Dimensions are prepared to the nearest millimetre, with a manufacturing tolerance of up to 2 mm either way.
