Picture Frame Sizing Guide
Understanding how we measure and build custom picture frames can help you order with confidence. Below is a glossary of the key terms we use when describing picture frame sizes and dimensions:
Image Size
This is the size you enter when creating your custom picture frame. We recommend entering the exact dimensions of your print, artwork, photograph, puzzle, or other piece. Your frame is custom-built to these measurements, ensuring a perfect fit regardless of the options you choose, such as matboards or glazing.
If you upload an image for printing, the Image Size will automatically lock to your image’s original ratio. This prevents any distortion or stretching. When you input either the width or height, the other dimension will adjust automatically to maintain the correct proportions.
Visible Size
Visible Size refers to the portion of your image that will remain visible once it is framed. To ensure a secure fit, all picture frames require a slight overlap on all edges, so a small part of your image will be covered by the frame or matboard. This is standard practice in custom framing.
Glass Size
Glass Size indicates the dimensions of the glazing (glass or acrylic) and backing board that sit inside the frame. This is typically the same size as the Image Size but does not account for any overlap or matboard adjustments.
Outer Size
Outer Size is the total external measurement of the finished frame, from edge to edge. This gives you an idea of how much wall space your framed artwork will occupy. Please note that the Outer Size is approximate. If you require exact outer dimensions for fitting into a space, please leave a note in your order comments and we’ll be happy to confirm.
Picture Frame Glass & Glazing Options
We offer a wide selection of high-quality glazing options to complete your custom picture frame. All our glass and acrylic choices are specifically designed for the picture framing industry—enhancing the presentation of your artwork while offering lasting protection. Below are the glazing options available:
Clear Glass
Our most cost-effective option, this 2mm thick clear framing glass is ideal for everyday picture framing. It offers a clean, transparent finish that suits most artworks and prints.
Clear Perspex (Acrylic)
Made from 2mm or 3mm optical-grade acrylic (depending on the size of the frame), Clear Perspex is lightweight, shatter-resistant, and highly durable. With 94% UV resistance, it helps prevent your prints and photos from fading over time. This is our most recommended glazing option for both safety and protection.
Non-Reflective Glass
This 2mm thick glass includes a matte coating that reduces glare and reflections, making it ideal for bright rooms or artworks displayed under direct lighting. It offers a soft, anti-glare finish without distorting the image.
UV Clear Glass
A 2.5mm thick premium glass that offers 99% UV protection to shield your artwork from harmful ultraviolet rays. It has the same clear appearance as standard glass or perspex but provides superior archival protection for valuable pieces.
UV Non-Reflective Glass
Combining the benefits of anti-glare and UV-blocking technology, this 2.5mm thick glass protects your artwork with 99% UV resistance while minimising reflections. It's visually similar to standard non-reflective glass but ideal for preserving sensitive prints and photographs.
Backing Information
MDF (Wood)
MDF is a 3mm thick compressed wood backing. It is rigid and durable, and will let you swap your images and photos easily. MDF is not acid-free. This is the cheapest (free!) backing we offer.
Adhesive Foamcore
Adhesive Foamcore is a lightweight backing that has a peel and stick layer for dry mounting your prints flat to the backing. When done correctly, this results in the flattest finish out of all 3 backings. All our foamcore options are acid-free to protect your images from fading for longer periods of time. We highly recommend this option if we are printing your images for you. Available in 3 or 5mm thicknesses.
Non-Adhesive Foamcore
Non-Adhesive Foamcore is a lightweight backing that allows you to easily swap your images in and out. All our foamcore options are acid-free to protect your images from fading for longer periods of time. We recommend this option if you aren't confident with dry mounting your photos with Adhesive Foamcore. Available in 3 or 5mm thicknesses

For imperial measurements, we also cater to sizes such as 4x6, 5x7, 6x8, 8x10, 8x12, 10x13, 11x14, 12x16, 12x18, 16x20, 18x24, 20x24, 20x30, 22x28, 24x30, 24x36, 30x40, and 40x60 inches. If your size falls outside these dimensions, we can create a fully custom solution just for you.
